Keeping safe inside and outside the home
As fires continue to rage throughout Australia, the importance of fire safety is at an all-time high this summer. With that in mind, here are some helpful tips on how you can be fire safe inside and outside of your home this summer:
Inside the home
Don’t overload power boards and electricity sockets when plugging in fairy lights and other electronic decorations.
Inspect all lights, electronic decorations and extension cords for faults and wear and tear.
Keep children and any flammable items away from lights as they may become very hot.
Turn off all lights and electronic decorations before going to sleep at night.
Ensure that your home is fitted with working smoke alarms and that you have a written fire escape plan for your home.
Outside the home
Keep the area around your home clear of leaves and other litter.
Clean your gutters regularly.
Always check that your BBQ is in safe working order and that it is only ever operated by a responsible adult.
While keeping ourselves and our loved ones safe this festive season is important, spare a thought for those less fortunate families who are experiencing severe drought and for those who have lost their homes, and sadly their lives, due to fire and extreme weather conditions.
